The detection of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) has proved to be a useful addition to the audiological test battery with a number of different applications:

• Objective diagnosis of hearing loss in infants referred from newborn hearing screening programs.
• Monitoring of cochlear damage caused by ototoxic medication or by noise exposure.
• Differential diagnosis: the sensitivity of OAEs in measuring cochlear function is useful for distinguishing sensory from neural hearing loss.
