The detection of otoacoustic emissions
(OAEs) has proved to be a useful addition to the audiological test battery with a number of different
applications:
- Objective diagnosis of hearing loss in infants referred from newborn hearing screening programs.
- Monitoring of cochlear damage caused by ototoxic medication or by noise exposure.
- Differential diagnosis: the sensitivity of OAEs in measuring cochlear function is useful for distinguishing sensory from neural hearing loss.
GN Otometrics’ Capella is currently the only device available which combines OAE measurement with middle-ear screening.
